Our third report from the Faster Than Sound festival at the Bentwaters Air Base in Suffolk, is (or should be) a real treat. The Modified Toy Orchestra are a group of musicians headed by Brian Duffy, a sort of musical artist. Using only modified childrens toys, which Duffy modifies in the circuit-bending fashion, the instruments are all played real-time by the five group members. The result is quite amazing, due in part to the unusual and unique sounds these toys generate but probably mostly to Duffy’s skills as a composer and arranger. The current release, Toy Go Pop (available at the Warm Circuit website) is the result of several years work, creating, modifying and recording many toys and following his own unique philosophy on creative energy and process. We caught up with Brian prior to his performance at the Aldeburgh Festival Faster Than Sound event.
