I have owned the tr909 for a few years now and it is a truely great analogue drum machine but recently I have been lucky enough to have access to d16 groups drumazon which emulates the tr909 in software and I must say it is wonderful it truely is. I have compared a real 909 and this software and dare I say it the software sounds better without the need for external processing. The kicks are superb with all the punch of the originals in fact I would say it has more punch. If you want the sound of a 909 but find the price a tad steep for a real one do yourself a favour and buy this software 128 quid it is and its brilliant-Even the sequencer grooves like the real thing.I may be selling my 909 after getting this software but I think it would hurt me deeply to do so as I love my 909-Sad I know but you kinda get attatched to the little blighters.peace and love to you all x

Owned one for 15 years.A true classic.totally changed the game,BUT,It's time to move on.You ever wonder why 90% of techno sounds the same, here's the culprit. Will always have a place, but at some point we have to look forward to the future and not backward toward the past.

909 is pure other classic analog Roland machines it's ALL in the sequencer. Sure you can sample every knob position but the groove is made using THAT's alive! the sound changes smoothly every measure, you can feel it. I'm finalizing my studio I need a TR808 and a Jomox XBASE but nothing more expensive than my 909. I paid it 900 euros!!!

The 909 is pure groove with very little effort, just key in a kick drum and snare set the levels and add shuffle function on about setting 2 then add hats....result pure groove. I dont think having a 909 will make or break your track, you dont need to have a 909 to make great kicking beats from samples and sampling the 909 can be done but you do miss the live tweeking the groove of the sequencer and just the fun of making beats with a 909.

The novation drum station does an amazing job of replicating the 909 and i have had them side by side on a set of makie monitors and i could not really tell the difference in sound but the groove was better on the 909 than cubase triggering the drumstation but im sure with tweeking you could get it close. The novation does not really do the 808 sounds but i personally think it nails the 909 sounds.

Is the 909 wort 700 quid???absolutely it will just take you in directions musically that you would probably not have gone down.

You do have to compress the kick drum and use eq though to get the goods. I have the airbass from jomox and that thing is a must have also some of the kicks on it eat the 909,but the 909 still just has a charm and sound and groove that you just cannot replicate when you put it all together.

I have never regretted spending 700 quid on it.

If this thing was stolen, i would probably cry...go to bed that night and wake up in the morning to cry again. The truth of the matter is, no matter how dated and overused the 909 sound is, you simply cannot duplicate this sound using a sample CD. I DONT CARE what people say, and how that you can sample the 909, stick it in a software sampler and tweak and it will sound better than the 909. That is rubbish! The 909 is the king of all kings. If you are checking up on the reviews here, its because you already are aware of this machine and know exactly what sound you want to get from it. Dont bother using samples, get the real thing. There truly is no basis for comparison.

Let me ask you a question. Do you want to get Vitamins and nutrients from a powder mix? Or do you want to get Vitamins from a fresh fruit?. That is the way i see it with the 909 in comparison with other emulators!
