My first tentative steps into the world of recording & mixing were taken via a trusty compact cassette Tascam Portastudio 244... back in the day when dinosaurs roamed the earth and I still had hair... so I still have a soft spot for the brand.
I spotted their stand at the show, and went over to see what was new, and amongst the rather tempting hand-held recorders on display (more on those later...) was a compact analog mixer - the M-16UF. Apparently Tascam are getting back into analog mixers via this new series - their Press blurb is below - so we asked Gary Maguire to give us a quick spin... Here's what they say:- "Utilizing fine analogue technology and sporting a fresh design, Tascam presents a new series of mixing consoles with 16 input channels, featuring numerous connections, a compact size and light weight, equally suitable as keyboard mixers or sub-mixers on stage, for home-recording purposes or at the heart of a small mobile or fixed PA system.

In addition to the features in the standard model M-164, the M-164FX boasts a built-in effects processor, and the M-164UF has an additional USB interface on top of that. The USB connection provides users with 16 audio inputs and two audio outputs on their computer. This makes the M-164UF the ideal choice for multitrack recording in the home studio or on the road. All three consoles are equipped with six microphone/line channel strips with XLR and 6.3 mm phone input jacks, phantom power and 3-band equalization plus five stereo channel strips to connect virtually every conceivable audio source. A 3.5 mm mini-jack on the top panel allows for quick connection of an MP3 player, and there is also a phono input to connect a turntable. A stereo sub-group and two aux sends complete the mix."
