Ableton's CV Tools - Control For Analogue CV Direct From Live

US New free Max For Live Pack out soon      15/07/19

CV Tools is a new free Max For Live add on Pack for Live 10.1.
Developed in conjunction with Skinnerbox, it offers integrated CV, trigger and clock control from within Ableton Live. The integration is pretty seamless, with 10 devices - the first of which is the CV Instrument with CV, Gate, Envelope and Modulation all integrated.
It also allows you to calibrate and save the CV scaling to ensure the maximum range for pitch tracking. Something which some Analogue instruments are not great with - so you can effectively create custom CV scaling for each instrument or module you have. You can also take external CV inputs and map them to Live parameters at hight audio rates which is a really powerful feature.

True, there are other methods for doing this, but the fact that this is working from inside of Live makes it more accessible.

Note: you need a DC coupled audio interface to be able to output Control Voltages from Live
For a list of compatible devices see here.

We had a visit from the excellent Simon Stokes from Shoogle Studios in Glasgow where he's an Ableton Certified Trainer.

You need Ableton Live Suite 10.1 to run CV Tools but it is a free update to registered users.

All CV Tools Modules:

  • CV Instrument -  CV outputs and an audio input for single channel integration
  • CV Triggers  - for sequencers, drum triggers etc
  • CV Utility - output CV directly with automation curves etc
  • CV Clock In and CV Clock Out - does exactly what you would think
  • CV In - read external CV input and map to internal Live parameters
  • CV Shaper - a complex custom waveform LFO/single cycle modulator
  •  CV Envelope Follower - from external input
  •  CV LFO -  an LFO

Ableton's  CV Tools will be available soon -  downloadable from your Ableton account
