weird...i was thinking about one of these a few days ago, or just the fast track ultra for a lappy setup, so this review has been VERY useful.

its that old chestnut, Nick, of not wanting to be constantly confined to one room at EVERY stage of the creative process. Maybe ive also started to feel it more of late cause i see all these hotshots turning up to gigs with laptops with all their prep work, whereas all i can do is just take my voyager, mopho, system 100 etc and "wing it" live .

Yeah I hear you, I think that one is really dependent on how "in the box" you are. If you use a lot of hardware in the creative process, then the transition to laptop world might be painful - it's just not as instinctive as reaching for the physical controls.

Lots of folks have been brought up on software only so they have an advantage their I think.

For live use, nothign beats hardware imho, simply because im from a time when i had no choice but to learn how to play an instrument AND do it with other people. This is mostly cause atari st's would crash incessantly in a studio, never mind havign any courage to use them live.

A lappy is good for live use, but maybe the live "show" aspect is enhanced or heightened with the potential for some pandemonium with hardware too. Most lappy's are nwo so well built that ive yet to see one go bananas live- even vince clarke used one for the yazoo tour, which i caught- but the visual aspect can be , shall we say, lacking a little. No one in the audience can see anything other than a furrowed brow belonging to an arched back over the screen. Not exactly stimulating is it? The karftwerk ( and yazoo etc) workaround is to have cool visuals in sync, but most people- including many dj's and artists i know- dont bother, which is a shame.
