Good show, I love how excited Gaz is about doing the Christmas songs, so now everyone is going to tune in to see it. The CS80 sounds great. The Juno 106 mod seems like a nice upgrade, but I am still hoping that Roland will reissue the original.

I recall seeing Guitorgan ads in music magazines in the late 60s/early 70s.

The Peavey MIDIbase of the 90s used the same split/wired fret technique to get around the tracking latency of pitch/MIDI (open E on a bass yields about 12 ms latency). I owned one for a few years, it did work but it was so bizarre playing synths from a bass guitar, easier for me to play keys (since I could do both). Similar idea to the Guitorgan minus the onboard sound engine.

I don't know what Vangelis use today, but I know exactly what he used at the end of the 80', when he had just started to put together this kind of "realtime" system. (Direct would probably be his word, hence the name of the record that was just out at the time) I had the luck of working with him back then, when he had to work in Rome for a couple of months and his tech guys were not available for a few weeks. The first time I entered the studio, his assistant made me listen to a track and told me that it was recorded the day before all in one take, without any overdubs and it was hard to believe. Then I had the first look at his system: about a dozen expression pedal (maybe more) where on the floor underneath is master keyboard (I think it was a Roland mkb 1000) Every instrument he was using had his output routed through his own volume pedal (2 juno 106 that were used in tandem to create it's famous pad sounds went to the same stereo volume pedal) So he was playing everything together (every instrument was on the same midi channel or in omni mode) and he was using the volume pedals to have instruments in or out of the mix. For percussion hits (like timpani or crash cymbals) he used just a quick press of the pedal at the right moment, so you only hear the percussion on the intended beat. So he recorded 23 tracks of keyboard at the same time (the 24th track was for timecode), and they were already mixed! He also had a reverb in his system (a 224XL at the time); The Larc Remote was placed at his keyboard rig Among the instrument that he was using at the time were: 2 Junos 106 for his pad sound A Roland U110 for the hi-string sound and, probably, an S550 for the mid string sound An Akai S1000 for orchestral percussion A Kurzweil K250 for Choir and other sounds sounds An M1 with the Universe preset A variable keyboard that was not controlled by his master keyboard and used instead for his solo lines (at first it was an Emulator II, than a few days later a Jupiter 6) The great thing was that he was able to improvise entire pieces with this setup, so this should give you an idea of his musicality He also had a nearly identical setup in his hotel suite! Sometimes, after the studio work, he asked me if I could go to the hotel to continue working It was an incredible experience, as you can imagine...
