Toneworks has announced the release of Catalyst which they describe as a modular VST/AU sequencing plugin that features a monophonic step sequencer, a harmoniser, and an arpeggiator. They say that Catalyst also acts as a host for VST/AU synth plugins and provides dedicated step sequencers for parameter automation.
Toneworks founder Ramus Buskov, told us, "We always felt that the piano roll was the wrong tool for electronic music production. That's why we created Catalyst. We wanted to combine the immediacy and inspiration you get from hardware sequencers with the superior capabilities of desktop software."
Toneworks says that Catalyst only plays notes and chords in the key chosen by the user, making the plugin a great tool for inexperienced producers that have little knowledge of music theory. They believe that it also means that the extensive randomisation capabilities of Catalyst can be used without ever producing results that sound false or out of place.
