Four Tube DIs In One Box

Four Tube DIs In One Box

Hazelrigg Industries has introduced the 4DI, which they describe as four channels of the best sounding all-tube Direct Injection (DI) to ever come together in two rack spaces. The equivalent of four of the company's VDI tube direct boxes, the 4DI's input circuitry is based on the same original design as D.W. Fearn's VT-I/F all-triode, vacuum tube direct box, which they describe as a legendary DI that set the standard to which all other DI boxes have been compared. Here's more details direct from the company...

The 4DI is more than just a super-clean vacuum tube direct input. Its unique harmonics enhancing design actually enriches the sound of whatever you plug in to it. As Doug Fearn himself explains, "Any circuit will saturate once you hit a certain level, and that saturation will generate certain harmonics. I designed the VT-I/F so it would reject third- and fifth-order harmonics, which introduce harshness and distortion, and reinforce second- and fourth-order harmonics, which reinforce the fundamentals of the original signal. In short, you get more of the good stuff and less of the bad."

Traditionally, DI boxes have been largely utilitarian converters that contributed very little to the input signal, and often even degraded it. But the 4DI is four discrete channels of signal enriching goodness, bringing greater depth and clarity to everything you put into it. As many an engineer has discovered, connecting through a high-quality DI box is like lifting layers of fog.

"Hazelrigg Industries 4DI has been an inspiring addition to my studio," enthuses engineer Mark Parfitt (Justin Bieber, Snoop Dogg, Normani). "There's a noticeably higher level of detail and a much more pleasing sonic footprint. Vintage synths are bigger and beefier, and recorded instruments sound more realistic, making them connect more deeply emotionally. I wish everyone's recordings sounded this good."

The 4DI has made an impact on tour too. "This is one of the most incredible DIs I have ever used," reports Travon Snipes, monitor engineer for Post Malone. "For us it brings the acoustic guitar to life. Anything you plug into it will sonically be better. It adds warmth and dimension to the source that not only is a joy to our ears but also to the audience listening. Ever since adding that to our arsenal the acoustic guitar sound has been enhanced tremendously."

First impressions from end users are equally positive, reports Mike Picotte, Senior Sales Engineer and Artist Relations at Sweetwater Sound. "With modern PA systems getting so good, it's wonderful that FOH engineers can now focus on getting a great, studio-quality mix in live situations. Being able to offer our partners a tool like the 4DI will help them to bring the audience experience to a completely new level. It's not just a direct box, it's a turbocharger for the entire audio chain."

About D.W. Fearn | Hazelrigg Industries

In 1993, D.W. Fearn entered the professional audio market with the VT-1 microphone preamplifier which immediately set entirely new expectations of how a microphone preamp should perform. Since then, it has remained virtually unchallenged. This amplifier design, developed by now-legendary designer Doug Fearn, was then implemented across a full line of high-performance products, including compressors, equalizers, and DIs. For the recording and voiceover artists, engineers, and producers who use these products, they have become an essential part of their craft, artistry, and workflow. D.W. Fearn products can be found in the most prestigious studios around the world. In 2017, after years of apprenticeship and experience working with Doug in the studio and at the workbench, brothers Geoff and George of Hazelrigg Industries established an exclusive licensing agreement to manufacture and market D.W. Fearn equipment. Doug Fearn continues to design new products and serves as a consultant and chief advisor.
We invite you to explore the world of D.W. Fearn products and to see how they have impacted the work of so many of the world's top professionals in music, film, radio, and television industries.
