Eurorack Module With Motorised Faders Ships

Der Mann mit der Maschine has launched two new modules, here's the story in his own words...

The new M4 Motorfader Controller is the first ever Eurorack module with motorized faders.  The M4 is a controller that connects to the Droid Master. Droid is a universal CV processor for generating and processing control voltage for Eurorack modular systems.

One M4 module has four motorized sliders as used in professional digital mixing consoles. Up to 16 controllers can be connected per Droid. The usual configuration is one or two M4 (so four or eight faders). But also four M4 (16 faders) are useful.

The faders can be used for any task like setting many different parameters per knob or CV presets. It is especially exciting to use the M4 as a performance sequencer. By automatically switching the faders between different "levels", it is possible to build a sequencer with multiple tracks and multiple CV values and parameters per track with just one set of faders. Thereby the faders always show the currently valid values and do not have to be "fetched" as it is the case with non-motorized simple faders.

Almost more exciting, however, is the fact that the M4 can generate noticeable haptic resistance via the motorized faders using "force feedback".  This allows the M4 to create artificial notches. For example, in sequencer mode, you can literally feel each note of the scale in the fader. This makes intuitive music making easier, since you don't need a display to set the desired value. Another type of force feedback is the simulation of a kind of "pitch bend wheel". Here, the fader automatically pushes back to its center position when moved away from it, as if pulled by an invisible spring.

The new S10 module is also a controller that is connected to the Droid Master. It has two rotary switches with eight positions each and eight toggle switches with three positions each. The switches can be assigned to any function. Rotary and toggle switches are particularly suitable for building interactive instruments with, since they are very hands on and their operation quickly passes into muscle memory.

The Droid Forge, released a few weeks ago, completes the Droid ecosystem.  The "Forge" is a graphical program for Windows and Mac, with which the Droid can be configured with mouse or keyboard. Previously, the configuration of the Droid required the creation of a text file. These files are still supported, but the Forge makes using the Droid System much easier. The software is available free of charge.

About "The Man with the Machine" and Droid:

Mathias Kettner from Munich - the head behind the project "The Man with the Machine" is known in the scene not only for his music, but especially for the project "Droid - Universal CV Processor". The Droid system is a set of modules for modular synthesizers in Eurorack format. The most important module is the "Droid Master". This has eight CV inputs and eight CV outputs, which can be assigned with virtually any imaginable CV function. For this purpose a so-called "Droid Patch" is loaded into the module. This consists of building blocks like LFOs, quantizers, CV mixers, envelopes, sequencers, math and logic blocks and much more. These blocks are called "Circuits". Currently there are 57 different such circuits, which can be linked together and bound to the CV inputs and outputs.

The Droid Patch is created with the free software "Droid Forge" on the computer. Droid Forge is available for Windows and Mac. Alternatively, you can also create a patch as a text file by hand.

Up to 16 controllers can be connected to the master, of which there are currently six different ones. The switches, knobs, buttons, LEDs and motorized faders of the controllers can be assigned to any function and parameter in the patch.

Besides the controllers there is also the G8 expander with eight gate inputs/outputs and the MIDI module X7, which makes MIDI connections via DIN and USB.  The X7 can do MIDI IN as well as OUT. So you can convert MIDI to CV as well as CV to MIDI. In addition, you have direct access to all imaginable MIDI functions, including clocks, start/stop, CCs, program changes and much more.

The Droid modules are available directly from "The Man with the Machine" as well as from various retailers worldwide:

- Tailor store (Germany)
- Thomann (Germany)
- Hieber Lindberg (Germany)
- Modular Square (France)
- Signal Sounds (Great Britain)
- Perfect Circuit (USA)
