The Ableton blog have an excellent three part look at 'A Brief History of The Studio As An Instrument' - detailing the development and evolution of the modern music studio. Part 1, Early Reflections goes back to the 1940s and the proliferation of tape; going beyond Edison's cylinder phonograph of the 1800s, and into the world of musique concrète and the work of Daphne Oram and Joe Meek in England alongside Bill Putnam in the USA.

Part 2 includes features George Martin, The Beatles, Delia Derbyshire, Doctor Who, Raymond Scott, Bugs Bunny and others. While Part 3 looks at the techniques, innovations, and changes which came from the likes of King Tubby, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Conny Plank, Patrick Cowley and others. It's an expansive look at the history and development of the home studios which most of us now carry around in a backpack! Links below.
