Squarepusher has always been a fascinating and supremely talented musician; moving between a vast range of musical styles, sonic landscapes, and live performances since his first release in 1995. In this rare extended interview he speaks to Holly Dicker for Resident Advisor about his releases, his approach to music and his inspirations.
Tom Jenkinson's work as Squarepusher is some of the most jaw-dropping and future-facing music of the last three decades. It's common to see him grouped alongside other key acts from the Warp stable like Aphex Twin and Autechre, but Jenkinson's musical horizons are uniquely all-encompassing. Few artists have managed to so convincingly create a dialogue--or an "argument" as Jenkinson puts it--between live instruments and electronic sound. It's a conversation he carries out at an insatiable rate, having released at least 14 LPs since 1996, all while pushing himself and his audience with new compositional approaches.
Resident Advisor contributor Holly Dicker spoke to Jenkinson on the eve of the release of his latest album, Be Up A Hello, his first in five years. He's also just released the Lamental EP and is on the cusp of embarking on a world tour, including headline appearances at Bangface Weekender and the Roundhouse.
