Two New Modules From BugBrand

A thru-zero FM & wave-morphing VCO and a thick audio phaser      21/09/21

Two New Modules From BugBrand

BugBrand designs not only look iconic with their bold blue/red/yellow/green combination, they also sound fantastic. Tom Bugs has been designing tabletop synths and electronic kits for many years, and has two new modules on offer:

The Phaser module is built around 12 all-pass filter stages (using 2164 VCAs for low-noise), thus making a 6-pole phaser for thick sounds! There is actually a jumper on the rear to allow 4 or 5 pole operation, but why would you want a tamer sound?!

The design offers:

  • Feedback can be internal or external – if you wanted to integrate some other processing into the loop, just take the direct wet Phase output and bring it back in via the Fdbk input. Feedback goes up to around self-oscillation ranges, especially if the input signal is below the system standard +/-5V amplitude
  • the Polarity switch affects the phase of both the wet phase output & the feedback path to give two distinct sonic phase responses
  • Output mixing of Dry & Wet to zone in on the perfect phasing balance – or mix externally, pan things, go crazy & make your ears spin
  • two modulation inputs, each with attenuator & polarity switch

The 2130 VCO is built around the powerful new SSI2130 chip – a feature-rich oscillator core in a tiny package with on-board features like great tuning & temperature stability, Linear FM that can be easily made to go Through-Zero, and a waveform mixer that can be used to morph through wave outputs.

This was designed to be a relatively simple & spacious implementation of the chip – it has a reasonable number of bells & whistles but doesn't try to cram everything in!

  • Audio or sub-audio rates, with decent tracking & temperature stability – two V/Oct inputs plus an extra Exponential FM input with attenuator
  • Hard Sync input with comparator so it works with any waveform
  • Linear Thru-Zero FM – jumper selectable as either DC or AC coupled (generally set as AC)
  • Voltage controlled Shape morphs the Wave output from Triangle through Saw and on to Square or Pulse (jumper selectable)
  • Extra Sine output

Both are available now and are each priced at £190.00 (Incl. VAT £228.00). More info on the BugBrand website.
