Dutch Festival Showcases The Modular Synth

The organisers of Utrecht Centraal, taking place on June 3rd have sent us this information:

On Sunday 3 June, music really will be all around in Utrecht. This free urban festival shows the multifaceted musical side of Utrecht as a city. The famous Dutch musician Colin Benders will open a pop-up Museum of Sound, specially compiled for the festival. In the Werkspoorkathedraal, an important hotspot for industrial heritage in Utrecht, modular synthesizers will take centre stage. In addition, established names in the Dutch music industry and up-and-coming talent will play live gigs at unusual venues in the historical inner city, including urban gardens, museums and shops. The music will vary from heavy metal to serious classical.

Colin Benders' Museum of Sound
Colin Benders, who made waves under the name Kyteman, will compile a special sound exhibition for Utrecht Centraal, giving free rein to his obsession for modular synthesizers. The modular synthesizer is an instrument that you can put together yourself, with countless effect modules, buttons, switches and cables. Curator Colin Benders is fascinated by the endless possibilities that the instrument provides for creating totally unique sounds. From ambient to acid, from subtle to techno. The Museum of Sound will open at an industrial location: the Werkspoorkathedraal, which used to be a factory where they produced trains, trams and railway carriages. Colin Benders has invited role models and colleagues from the world of modular synthesizers (including Christophe Beck and Daniel Cramer) to come to the Werkspoorkathedraal in the days before the festival to compose work specially for the space. Pioneer Suzanne Ciani will make a special patch for the Museum of Sound. Their work will be accompanied by creations by lighting artists such as Jerobeam Fenderson and Tearing light from sound. The museum will only be open on Sunday 3 June 2018 from 11.00 to 19.00.

Utrecht Centraal
Utrecht musicians from every genre will perform throughout the inner city from morning until night: from pop to jazz and from classical to world music. At the foot of the ancient Dom Tower, four Utrecht pop venues will present the very latest bands. And in music palace TivoliVredenburg, which comprises five separate auditoriums, the Polish jazz pianist Leszek Mozdzer will join musicians from Holland Baroque in the Main Auditorium. Eefje de Visser, one of the Netherlands’ most original singer-songwriters, will close the festival in the garden of the Centraal Museum, which will be magically transformed into a festival location for the occasion.
