Few pieces of music technology have influenced a whole generation of production more than the Roland TR-808. Yet another example of how a machine intended for one purpose, creating an accompanyment for playing out was abused to create the sound of the moment.

808 The Movie - has a star studded cast of talking heads, including: Arthur Baker, Rick Rubin,  Afrika Bambaata, Norman Cook, Pharrell Williams and many more.

Its hard to underestimate the impact that this drum machine has had on contemporary music - Planet Rock being one of the first really big tunes, but there are so many more. Its internal groove is legenday, as well as it providing a bridge between various disparate instruments - Trevor Horn being one of the first studio users to create sequenced/triggers lines with the Mini Moog.

The film, directed by UK filmmaker Alexander Dunn,  gets its debut at SXSW this Friday (13th)  at 3.45 at the Alamo Lamar C
