Pendle Poucher (virb.com) who in previous months has brought us the dulcitone and prepared binaural harpsichord has released Steel Drum Percussion Room which he describes as a new kit of lovely dusty binaural acoustic drum samples and slightly prepared steel drums....a kind of Tom Waits drum machine featuring drums and hit things in all shapes and sizes and currently available in Kontakt, SFZ, Giga, soundfonts, Ableton Live Sampler, EXS and Reason NNxt
He tells us that there’s 4 octaves of multi-velocity huge flappy marching band bass drums, ripped and rattly snares and kicks, frame drums, congas, bongos, toms, hi-hats, cymbals, boxes, metal shelving...you name it.
There are also prepared steel drums, a neglected set of bass steel pans played with fingers and soft mallets to avoid sounding anything like proper steel drums. Pendle says, “its about character, these are more apocalypse than calypso. The tunings are a bit iffy, but theres plenty of velocity layers per hit for a rusty hang drum like effect -great for film scoring.
We are told that both kits were recorded binaurally in a great sounding room with long decays for a total of 168mb of samples.
