Firewire control from Tascam
Tascam have turned the heat up on the FireWire market here at NAMM with the introduction of the FW-1884. The FW-1884 is a professional DAW control surface and integrated Audio/MIDI interface that uses the FireWire high-speed data transfer protocol. With an 18-channel audio interface, 8 mic pres, 4x4 MIDI interface and flexible editing and mixing controls, the FW-1884 is a front end for DAW recording workstations.
As it comes, the FW-1884 has eight XLR mic/line inputs with inserts, Eight ADAT I/O and a single S/PDIF I/O.
Not dissimilar to the Digidesign 002 concept, the Tascam is priced very competitively at $1599. For more hands on control, you can add banks of eight faders with the FE-8 expander. Each fader bank is connected by FireWire cable.
"The FW-1884 is much more than just a fader controller, it takes command of your entire studio," says Jim Bailey, TASCAM Product Specialist. "With all of its mic pres, audio and MIDI interfacing, editing, mixing and monitoring control, it replaces much of the gear you need to record into a DAW."
