Opposite a blasting stand demoing giant PA speakers sits Dave Smith, a sort of zen like calm surrounds his stand although this is shattered by the occaisional monstrous and other worldly synth sounds. For those that don't know - Dave was famous for his work for the legendary synth company Sequential Circuits Inc (SCI), responsible for such gems as the Prophet V and also the VS. Dave's been working on a new synth "to get away from working in software". We took a look at the Evolver, Dave's latest offering. Evolver is an analog digital hybrid with analog elements such as VCOs VCAs and filters, combined with an on board DSP chip and an on-board sequencer to compliment. As Dave says - "It has a lot of personality" - we tend to agree - just take a listen to the demo. Sounds can be accessed like a module via MIDI or from the built in step sequencer for a more stand-alone operation. With Dave's new company Dave Smith Instruments, Dave has chosen to keep things simple with Dave handling all aspects from designing the Evolver to promotion and the like. DSI as we'll call it for the sake of my typing fingers sells the Evolver directly, shipping worldwide to all who wish to purchase. Priced at $475 in the US or $500 including worldwide shipping you can order your through the www.davesmithinstruments.com
