This is Drawmer's update of the DS201 and is basically a 201 with the addition of Peak Punch circuitry to each channel. Peak Punch boosts the leading edge of a gated signal by up to 12dB for a 10ms period to give it more definition. It can do this over the full bandwidth or at a set frequency dialled in by a knob over the range 75Hz to 16kHz.

Good Points
The DS501 has all the features and knobs of a DS201 but squeezed into a smaller space, so is immediately familiar to anyone who has used one. It can be used exactly the same as a 201 but has the option of switching Peak Punch into the signal path. Peak Punch is a great feature particularly when used with a specific frequency set by the tune knob. What you can do is to add in some frequencies that might be lacking in the leading edge of the sound to give it an extra dollop of wallop, this is very effective on drums and can be used to make tom hits more prominent, give a kick drum a harder edged attack or more thud and even to add a rimshot sound to a straight snare hit. There's a lot of power available here, and although Peak Punch seems primarily designed to work on drums and percussion it will also work well on any instrument with a percussive attack to give it more front end punch and impact. The extra £90 or so over the cost of a standard 201 is well worth it for that extra versatility.
