Rack mounted recording channel with integral headphone amplifier. The Channel One seems to be designed to have everything you need to record vocals and acoustic instruments in one box. There is a preamp that can handle signals directly from instruments as well as microphones, a de-esser, compressor, noise gate, limiter and 3-band EQ with a distortion control.

Good Points
The Channel One is supremely easy to use, everything is clearly laid out and many of the functions have just one knob controlling them with such things as compressor attack and release times and noise gate release time being program dependent. The de-esser detects the 's' sounds and uses phase inversion to suppress them rather than compression, the setting up being dead easy and sounding quite natural. The compressor is well set up for vocals and smooths them out nicely, and the distortion control, used in moderation, can actually enhance the vocal sound. The EQ section is versatile, with the two semi-parametric lower bands both covering a wide range of frequencies sweepable by a rotary knob, while the top band has just a cut/boost knob operating on the 'air' part of the spectrum. The built-in headphone amplifier makes this unit an ideal front end for anyone working with a computer based workstation as the stereo output from the computer can be monitored through the headphones at the same time as the incoming signal being recorded, the two signals having separate front panel knobs to obtain the correct balance. Overall the Channel One provides a high quality, easy to use, signal path from microphone/instrument to recorder.
