Stereo compressor with a 6 band EQ section. The 747 uses class A discrete circuitry but has a facility known as TSP (twin signal path) that allows tubes (valves) to be switched into the signal path at two points to change the sonic character.

Good Points
This unit has a real classy sound and is very versatile. The compression is ultra smooth and the six band EQ is very natural allowing for some nice subtle shifts in tonal character, it's great for adding that final touch to a stereo mix. The compressor has low and high frequency parametric controls built into the sidechain which can be switched in for frequency conscious control of the compression which gives a lot of control over just which parts of the sound will be compressed. The TSP technology is a bonus for anyone wanting another method of tweaking the signal. When the tubes come into play they don't so much radically change the sound as add a different flavour to it as only valves can.
Bad Points
Calibration marks on the graphic EQ would have been useful.
