Reason is a great app.

I have Project 5, Sonar 5 and Reason 3. The best thing about Reason is that it gives me no hassle. Also having just about everything you need in one app without the reliance on 3rd party software is great.

A lot of people down reason on this but I feel this is why they have such a stable program. Look at all of the other software forums and you will hear problem posts about how this VST don't work right.

Reason does have drawbacks,

1. It can't record audio. (But I think Reason was intended to be used with a Rewire host such as Sonar, Pro Tools).

2. Sound quality in standalone mode isn't up to par with other apps. (This can be a big deal sometimes, but if you can hold it out until Rewire time or just compose in Rewire mode you will find Reason sounds about just as good as everything else in some cases better).

3. Main sequencer is not up to par with other apps. (My biggest complaint with Reason). I think Reason needs to adopt basic clip style editing with clip cropping looping, step recording in the piano roll etc, metronome with a count-in etc. In the end you can get around most disabilities but I feel in order for a product to tout all you need is this product, extra extra attention should me made about the main sequencer being as smooth as possible. Even groove matrix style sequencing would be nice.

I was in the market for a Yamaha Motif ES music workstation until someone suggested I look at Reason as an alternative. I have no regrets going this way and am pleased with Reason 2.5. (saved a fortune as well!) I believe that the only limiting factor (at the moment anyway) is my lack of experience using Reason, in time this will change though. If anybody could recommend an instruction book etc...that would be appreciated.

I have exhausted Reason Adapted (in like 2 minutes) and then downloaded the Reason 2.5 demo and ran that as a slave in my Ableton Live 4. BRAND NEW WORLD! I was using its main competitor (FL Studio 5 - too many bugs and very unreliable in comparison!) but Reason leaves them all in the dust! I am anxiously awaiting my Adapted upgrade and then will take to performing Live! ANY KIND OF MUSIC can be generated just in Reason alone! Everything from extreme noise (the Scream 4 is the best distortion unit yet in the virtual realm) to new age! The sound banks are truly remarkable sounding. Even the orchestral instruments are very good. But the real magic with Reason comes with running it via Rewire in a host (like Live 4). You are then able to re-evaluate (remix) your creations from Reason on the fly, in real-time! Great stuff!
