This really is an incredible value for a very multipurpose mic. Used for horns, vocals, percussion, drums and acoustic guitar, I find the nt1 very warm. Compared to the ~5x more expensive Blue mouse and dragonfly mics I consistently get a much richer sound with less tinkering of mic placement even with no preamp. Subtleties cannot be heard as well (presence, breathing etc.) so I use both at the same time, however, if I had to use only one, it would be the nt1 as I find it more representative of the real sound. I'm surprised at the last post because if anything, I might brighten up the signal a little - but I usually don't need to tweak much. Very good for up close as well as for overhead. Definitely a professional mic and indispensable part of my studio. I give the sound an 8/10 for being dull at times, but I'd expect to have to spend + >$500 to bring score to 9.

Overall, arguably a very good value. It is a bit more detailed than most mics in its price range, but has an obnoxiously bright sound that can be very problematic with close sources. It certainly looks professional, though it is a little spartan as far as the feature set is concerned.

for $179, there isn't a better mic out there. excellent on vocal tracks, decent as an overhead drum mic, great on acoustic guitars, and just about anything else you would need to mic. i run the røde nt1 through the xdr preamps on my mackie board and run it into my roland vsr-880 and all i can say is that it sounds awesome! when i run the nt1 though my presonus blue tube, the sound is unbelievably phat and smooth. i agree with the article in electronic musician that called this mic the "best mic at any price".
