Conclusions
The Emu E4xt Ultra is a truly outstanding sampler with a great sound and tons of useful features. Nevertheless, there is room for improvement in certain areas. Most importantly, I would like to see the RAM capability expanded to 256 meg or greater, as I find the 128 meg maximum the only real limitation of this sampler. I emailed Emu about this and they responded that the current generation of samplers will not support 256 meg RAM, but future generations possibly will. I'd also like to see a few real time control knobs and an audition feature similar to the Proteus 2000. Finally, it would be wonderful if the sampler could address its full RAM allotment while a ROM card is active (currently only 64 meg is available for user samples when a ROM card is in use). However, there is a software switch to toggle the sound ROM on and off, meaning that the sampler does not need to be rebooted to change modes.
ULTRA-FINAL CONCLUSION
The E4xt Ultra sounds great: big and full, and dare I even use a subjective term like warm? You can burn your own custom Flash-ROM chips for use in the sampler or in a Proteus 2000, allowing you to take your own personal sample library around to gigs in a one space synth. To my knowledge, no other manufacturer offers as well a thought out and executed system of combining sampler and synth products. If you are looking for a big sampler with tons of editing capabilities and easy but powerful OS, then the E4xt Ultra is definitely one to put at the top of your shopping list
