It takes a bit of getting used to after years spent working with software sequencers, and it can seem a struggle at first trying to figure out exactly what everything does. That said, this is not a toy, it's a professional piece of kit, and that assumes a certain level of proficiency with music technology in general. After a while the grid pattern sequencer method becomes familiar, and you realise that this system is for the benefit of those who may not have traditional keyboard skills, but want to create complex keyboard rhythms and sequences.
At the price the Monomachine is an investment, but it's also a one-of-a-kind instrument, and with a little time and practice, it can yield very rewarding results, and very possibly scare your neighbours with its thunderous basses and cutting lead synth sounds. The one thing that becomes more apparent when you spend some quality time with the MonoMachine, is that it is incredibly deep - there's so much stuff under the hood that is waiting to be explored by the enquiring mind - but even just scratching the surface will give excellent results.
Once again, Elektron have created a innovative electronic instrument worthy of classic status. It's a credit to the industry that quality and innovation can still be acheived if you put your mind to it, something that some larger companies could no doubt learn from - well done Elektron.
The Monomachine is also available as a desktop unit, the SFX-60 without the keyboard and joystick, essentially just the brains that may suit the more space or budget conscious.
Monomachine SFX-6 RRP - $1950 USD /1950 Euros
Monomachine SFX-60 (without keyboard + joystick) RRP - $1350 USD / 1350 Euros
