The E4xt Ultra ships with Volumes 1-8 from the Emu CD ROM library, plus the EOS Link software on CD-ROM that allows PC and Mac users to control their Emu EOS sampler remotely from their Mac or PC computer. I think that including the sample libraries with the sampler is a smart move on Emu's part, as it provides a great starting CD-ROM library and allows the user to get playing immediately without shelling out yet more money for libraries at the same time they've just paid for a sampler. Later, as needs (and finances) dictate, the user can buy high quality sample libraries from 3rd party vendors.
All Emu EOS samplers with OS version 4.10a or later support the burning of 16 or 32 meg Flash-ROM cards, meaning that the user can burn custom ROM's not only for the sampler, but also for use in Emu's Proteus 2000 synth (version 1.11). This integration between product lines is wonderful, as it means that any custom sounds needed for gigs or tours can be taken along in a light one rack space unit, leaving the much heavier (and more expensive) sampler at home. I haven't yet had a chance to test the transfer of Flash-ROM from the E4xt to the Proteus 2000, but I'm sure at some point I will use the feature.
Special kudos goes to Emu for posting free EOS operating system upgrades on their web site. Using a Mac, I was able to properly upgrade my sampler from version 4.02 to 4.10a on the first try. Shouldn't it always be this way?
Emu offers other samplers in the EOS line, the E6400 Ultra, E-Synth Ultra, and E5000; think of them as variations on a theme. The differences between their feature sets goes beyond the scope of this review, so I would suggest visiting Emu's web site to make comparisons between models.
