The grand tour
A rather subdued blue and grey single space rack mounted unit with a small display and a lone data entry knob, the basic Plugstation has MIDI in, out and thru sockets but there are several options that can be factory supplied or retro-fitted. The X board adds a PLG socket D-type connector for linking up to an SW1000G, the Y board is for the stand alone version adding eight 1/4" jack outputs (two per card) and an 8 channel ADAT digital output socket to send the 8 audio channels to a digital mixer or any other ADAT compatible device. Finally, the Z board is an adjunct to the Y board and allows SW10000G card audio to be passed to the individual outputs alongside the PLG cards. The Plugstation is available direct from Kenton with 4 different board combinations, (X, Y, X+Y, X+Y+Z).

A blanking panel around the rear of the unit reveals two slots when unscrewed and removed. Each slot can accommodate two cards, connection being by a flexible cabling arrangement.

Yamaha PLG Cards
Those of you not already familiar with the Yamaha PLG cards will be pleased to know that there are several varieties of synthesiser type and hence sounds available. The PLG 150AN and the PLG100DX cards are the equivalents of the AN200 and DX200 desktop synths which give access to a powerful physically modelled 2 oscillator analogue synth and an emulation of the legendary DX7 respectively. The PLG150PF card covers pianos, both acoustic and the classic electric types, plus related family such as harpsichord and Clavinet, all with 64 voice polyphony. The PLG100VL is the equivalent of a VL70M physically modelled synth, and the PLG100XG, the only one of the cards to be multitimbral, contains a full XG sound set. A sixth card is the PLG100VH, a DSP3 based (like the 02R) vocal harmoniser and effects board for use in conjunction with an SW1000G.
