Integration
REASON communicates with your audio hardware in a variety of ways. For those without multi-channel soundcards it will patch straight to your computer's stereo audio out. Using ASIO drivers on a Mac, Direct X or MME in Windows it will speak to almost every audio card available. But the real plus is that you can use Propellerhead's REWIRE technology to output up to 64 channels of REASON directly into your sequencer for extra processing and integration into audio based arrangements.
Currently this only works with Cubase VST, although support will be added with Logic vers. 4.7. My only complaint is the lack of support for Digidesign's Direct Connect to allow patching into the ProTools mixing environment - add this and they are on an absolute winner.
REASON operates at both 44.1khz and 48khz allowing for use in any digital setup.
As for Midi, it couldn't be simpler; on a Mac you need to have OMS installed and a keyboard with Midi out - connect this to your computer's Midi in assign to REASON and you're away. The latency when playing is hardly noticeable, and there are options to alter this is accordance with your audio drivers. REASON automatically adjusts internal latency to keep in sync if you're running alongside another midi sequencer.
