Heard any good Rumours lately?
The cost of quality reverb effects has been going down over the past few years, and there are a number of low cost units that offer great bang for the buck. The competition in the under $1,000 range is stiff, but there's always room for another box that ups the ante like the Rumour does.

In a word, the Rumour reverbs sound way better than they cost, which is to say they sound wonderful. The reverb banks in the Rumour include: Ambience, Small Rooms, Large Rooms, Small Halls, Large Halls, Plate/XXL, Gated/Reverse/Compressed Reverbs, Unusual, and Laserverb. Add to this the delay, chorus and flange banks and you have a very capable box. There are also compression effects included as part of some reverb patches.

My favorites are the plates, particularly the Medium Warm Plate and Real Smooth Plate programs. The Halls, Rooms and Ambience are noteworthy as well. The Rumour is very clean, not putting much of an audio signature on the incoming signal, a welcome feature in a box this price. I found the reverb tails to be smooth and detailed.

One thing I noticed immediately in both the Rumour and Mangler is the quality of the preset programming. I was able to easily find a preset close to what I was looking for and then zone in quickly on my sound with just a little tweaking. Thankfully, the presets are labelled quite clearly as to what their intended purpose is. For example, program names like "Add More Air", "Spitty Drum Room", "Brass Chamber", "Immense Mosque" help greatly with efficiently locating the appropriate effect for the task at hand.

One of the biggest tests for any reverb box is on exposed solo acoustic tracks. I put the Rumour to this test right away, using it on several acoustic piano tracks I recorded for a short film. Right away I liked the mood of the plate reverb for the track, and was able to quickly adjust the effect to be what I was looking for. One of my favorite techniques is to layer two reverbs together for a little extra richness, and on these tracks I layered the Rumour with my PCM-91. In other words, that's the league this little box is playing in. On another track I used the Rumour as the sole reverb and was very happy with the results.
