In Use
Not having an SW10000G card, I used the Plugstation in stand-alone mode. First task was to stick a bunch of PLG cards in the slots, an intricate job as the cards need careful handling and are a tight fit but fortunately only something you have to do once. Having successfully installed all four cards (the front panel clearly displays when a card is correctly installed and active) I was ready to hear some sounds. Now, the default setting is that card slot 1 is addressed by MIDI channel 1 with the sound outputted from outputs 1and 2 and so on, couldn't be simpler. Connecting the Plugstation up to Logic Audio all the installed cards were being sent MIDI data in no time at all.

The display clearly displays MIDI activity leaving you in no doubt that the Plugstation is receiving the data but other aspects to the display/data entry interface can initially be confusing. Kenton were originally going to leave the Plugstation without a data entry knob, with all the control coming from a connected computer, but then relented and equipped the unit with a limited amount of front panel control including access to 64 memory locations for setups. The problem is not that the capabilities are limited - there is in fact plenty here that can be tweaked, it's just that the combination of turning and pushing the data knob coupled with all the adjustable parameters being identified by 4-character abbreviations doesn't make for an easily navigable system, still it's an advantage over not having it. Far better to do any tweaks and edits from your computer though, and bearing in mind that each card comes with its own editor on CD-ROM that can be used with suitable editing software such as XGEDIT, a high degree of editing is available. with an SW1000G.
