LA Adventures - The Village Studios
The Village | Another outing in LA for our roving reporter Shorn Rah, found him inside the hallowed Village Studios. Founded in 1968 by Geordie Hormel - a TV composer who's work in the 1950s and '60s ranged from Lassie and Ozzie & Harriet to The Fugitive and The Untouchables, you wont believe the number of classic albums these studios have had a hand in. Sly and the Family Stone, Burt Bacharach, The Beach Boys and more recently Busta Rhymes, Destiny's Child, Dr Dre, Missy Elliot, the Fugees, Madonna and even Jenny from the block have popped in to grab a slice of the unique Village vibe.
The building is an amazing old Masonic lodge from the 1920's with its own aura and even a ghost or two (they say) and is one of the few remaining classic LA recording complexes. Clearly destined to be around for many years to come, it was recently given a full make-over and totally redesigned with updated rooms, three Neve consoles - a classic 72 channel 8048, a new Neve 88R and a VR Legend, plus a 5.1 Protools HD system in the new Studio F.
The Village Recorder is famous for landmark sessions by Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, The Rolling Stones (Angie), Supertramp (Breakfast in America), Pink Floyd (Momentary Lapse of Reason), the last three Smashing Pumpkins releases, Barbra Streisand, the last two Chili Peppers and Korn releases, The Wallflowers, Rage Against The Machine, Melissa Ethridge, Oasis, Usher, Nine Inch Nails, Nelly and many other projects.
Brookelyn | It's also been home to several hit film scores including The Bodyguard, Shawshank Redemption, Mulan, Tarzan, Almost Famous, Something About Mary, Moulin Rouge, Ali, Walk The Line (the new Johnny Cash film) and Lemony Snicket.
Brookelyn Boyle, our glamorous guide for today and Protools guru extraordinaire, has herself spent many hours in sessions at the Village and knows plenty about the rooms and history of this great institution.
Enjoy.
Many thanks to Jeff Greenberg Darren Frank for their hospitality.
