Video Game Lets You Play A Modular Synth

Synthmulator lets you mess around with a synthesizer and a bunch of patch cables   22-Nov-18

Developer Oscar Sebio has been in touch to tell us about Synthmulator, a simulation video game for Windows, based around a modular synthesizer.

Synthmulator puts you in a 3D environment with a first person perspective, a modular synthesizer and a bunch of patching cables. It is a video game in the sense that was not made as a music production tool but it provides a fully usable modular synthesizer based on the eurorack system and equipped with plenty of modules - VCOs, LFOs, VCAs, filters, mixers, a sequencer and an oscilloscope.

The synthesizer

The PROTO-1 is an modular synthesizer based on the eurorack system using a case with 2 rows of  68HPs with the following modules:

  •     2 VCOs (Voltage Controlled Oscillators) for audible frequencies.
  •     2 LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) up to 20hz.
  •     2 ADSR (Attack-Decay-Sustain-Release) envelope generators.
  •     2 resonant filters with high and low pass outputs
  •     2 2-channel splitters
  •     A speaker
  •     An 8 step sequencer
  •     An oscilloscope
  •     A 3-channel VCA (Voltage Controlled Attenuator)
  •     2 4-channel mixers
