We caught up with Phil Jamison, chief designer at Matchless Amplifiers, who talked us through an updated version of the Matchless Avalon 30 - one of the company's most revered amplifiers.
With around 300 made during the first run of the Avalon 30, Phil has redesigned the amplifier and re-released it for 2014.
The new Matchless Avalon 30 is smaller than its predecessor, with a laydown transformer rather than the stand-up used in the original model.
The previous model also offered a choice between EL34s and EL84s in the power section. To reduce the size of the amplifier, Phil made the decision to only offer EL84s, which were the more popular choice the first time round.
