Other Sounds

That's the bass line and drums sorted; I think I'll add in a melody. I'll use the Plonk sound from before as a starting point.

Here's what I came up with, it's pretty cheesy but I like it.

Add reverb and chords, done!

A simple Pad sound made from 2 detuned sine waves with slow Attack and Release times.

Another pad: This time I added chorus and a tremolo effect to add a bit of variation to the timbre.

An arpeggio which was made from a sine with a very shot decay time and buckets of reverb. I used a low pass to shave some of the high end off. I used delay and chorus once again to make it sound different from the Plonk sound.

Psytrance lead

This one was pretty complex, for me at least.

I'd usually have no problem dialing in the right settings for a Trancy Acid type sound. The problem is that the characteristic "wob-a-bab-a-bab-aow" effect is kinda difficult to achieve when you don't have any harmonics to work with.

So how can I create lots of harmonics?

I could use additive synthesis to create a saw wave, but I don't really think that would be in the spirit of the challenge. I also just can't be bothered to do it, so forget that.

How about distortion?

I know that when transients are clipped they get squared off at the top, so if I add a harsh distortion to a sine it will get squashed into a square... right?

Awesome, now I have some harmonics to work with

Add in another oscillator an octave below

The sound really came alive when I added Chorus, reverb and delay to it.

I also added distortion after the filter which gave it a more aggressive sound.
