This machine is exactly what I wanted for creating music. DO NOT buy this for you first sampler or a 'Groove Box' copy. You really need other gear to take full advantage of the MPC. I have many synths and standard samplers to allow me to use the MPC as a drums-only piece of kit. (Which is what it is built for) The sequencer is top notch and kills my MMT-8 as far as features but has the rock solid timing that you need for drum-rolls and such. If you want to get away for the PC or just use Cubase for minor work instead of composition then this box is for you.

I'm not sure if the MPC2000XL is so much greater than the MPC2000 other than a adjustable display (Which is nice compared to my friends A3000), Timestretching (which is nasty slow...use the PC for that), Flash based OS (no more booting the new OS from a floppy!!!), and a handfull of other things.

I enjoy this machine for vocal samples and wierd noises also... Its like painting with a palette of sound. It CANT take a bass sample and play it over a keyboard. Its mainly used for drums and vocal hits or a nice FX sound.

The pads rock for loose drum programming. If you want that 80's hip-hop tight quantize sound then I suggest hooking up a 4 bar loop and step programming. Drum rolls are sweet with the 'Note Repeat' button too.

The built in SCSI is cool. I've already gotten a JAZ drive hooked up to it. I've maxed out the RAM for those precious extra minutes of sampling also.

To make a long story short...Get some cheap synths, a real sampler, and go pick up a MPC2K XL... Then all you need is talent:)
