In this SonicLAB, we dive into the Oberheim TEO-5, an analogue synthesizer designed to please the vintage sound enthusiasts while being more budget-friendly. This compact instrument has a 44-key keyboard equipped with aftertouch (channel), 5 voice polyphony, and the classic Oberheim filter that has come to define its unique sound. Complemented by a layout similar to the Take-5, the TEO-5 features the Oberheim oscillators and a variable state filter, preserving the brand's iconic audio signature.
The synth includes a versatile modulation matrix with 16 slots, through-zero oscillator FM, and a suite of onboard effects, although its 5-voice limitation does require a bit of adjustment for more notey (a word?) playing styles.
Priced around £1,450 / $1,499, the TEO-5 presents itself as a solid choice for those seeking the rich tones of an Oberheim without breaking the bank. While there are competitors like the Behringer UB-XA offering more voices and poly aftertouch. The TEO-5 is the real deal.
