Native Instruments Kontakt is the defacto standard for delivering large, highly sophisticated sample sets, with many orchestral and acoustic instrument libraries available as well as allowing the user to program their own complex sample based instruments.
The Kontakt Player is a free version and there are also many libraries that are compatible with it.
