The iConnectivity guys are pretty smart, so it's always worth checking out what they've come up with next... and at this NAMM show they're releasing the iConnectAUDIO 2+  Interface.

In a nutshell, it's a USB audio interface, but in addition, one that allows you to connect multiple computers, and to bridge audio digitally between those different devices.

So you could use your iPad as an effects processor for audio that's on your Mac - and it's all done in the digital domain, you don't have to use the headphone output on the iPad.
