Metallica have extended their deal with Universal Music Publishing, who will not only control distribution of the band’s back catalogue, but also new material.

The major label first represented the band in 1988, and the deal excludes North America and Japan.

Universal Music Publishing president of Europe Paul Connolly indicated that he was delighted to have secured the deal, "Metallica are one of the biggest selling bands of all time and have created a phenomenal body of work during the last three decades."

As we recently reported, Metallica are currently making a collaborative album with Lou Reed, but when this is completed they will move on to their 10th studio album. Producer Rick Rubin, who produced the band's most recent effort "Death Magnetic" (and produces other extremely loud albums), told Billboard that he recently met with drummer Lars Ulrich and will meet with the rest of the band soon:

"I'll ask a lot of questions and we'll probably listen to some of the riffs they've been writing. And usually I'll hear something that will sort of indicate the direction and then we'll talk about it from there."

Metallica has not indicated when they will released their currently unnamed album, or even when they will begin the recording process.
