Inside the Mix, a new demo CD or AIFF download from Royer Labs gives you a behind-the-scenes look at how engineers around the world are using ribbon microphones. The company says that thanks to the generosity of a number of engineers and producers who graciously accessed their master recordings, you'll hear 20 mixed songs, followed by the isolated Royer-recorded tracks that went into them.
John Jennings had this to say, "In my work at Royer Labs, I've had the privilege of attending a great number of recording sessions. It's inspiring to see the variety of ways ribbon microphones are being used today. They're literally in all forms of music and at all levels of recording and live work - imparting the warmth, smoothness, and natural response that quality ribbons are known for. One of the most revealing parts of attending these sessions has been hearing the isolated tracks that make up the final mixes. When Alan Meyerson solos the woodwind overheads or a flute recorded on an R-122V, or Jim Ebdon solos Matchbox Twenty's or Maroon Five's live guitars or drums, or Al Schmitt solos a great trumpet player or string section, I've always thought "I wish people could hear this." It's one thing to listen to a final mix, but from an engineering standpoint, it's quite another to hear, through the isolated tracks, how instruments tracked on ribbons sound so real and fit so easily into the mix."
