The new Zed R16 from Allen & Heath is stuffed with quality electronics, the 16 mic amps are "the best we make", the EQ’s "have five op-amps each - just for the mids" according to product designer Mike Griffin, and that’s just the analog side.
Also included in the new desk is an 18 in and out FireWire audio interface (24bit 96kHz) which operates very much like an old-school inline console – eg: you can switch any channel to be analog input, with the output to the corresponding FireWire audio channel input or be a discreet FireWire audio channel return. You can take the signal pre-EQ or pre-fader, giving you plenty of options for monitoring and recording paths, ditto with the return - if you want to use the EQ, or just the fader, no problem. The desk can also work as a standalone 16 channel ADAT IO interface via the rear switches.
Also on board is the MIDI control mode - each fader can be switched to send MIDI volume data, there’s also a dedicated MMC MIDI transport control, eight assignable knobs and eight buttons. It's a pretty impressive feature set.
Set to be available in July at a price in the region of £1500 UK it's good value too.
