The latest DVD from ‘Yamaha Motif’ specialists KEYFAX NewMedia is on the entry-level synth, the MM6.
Making Beats On The Yamaha MM6 looks at the ‘MiniMo’ from the perspective of using the instrument to create hip-hop beats. After a quick look at the history of hip-hop—tracing the development of both the music and the technology throughout the past twenty-five years—the program provides a detailed look at the MM6 controls and philosophies before diving headlong into the art of drum programming.
Hosted by David Bortnick and Daniel Goldstein from influential young hip-hop outfit Nobody’s Own, the program goes on to explore the MM6’s multi-track sequencer, sounds and FX, before detailing exactly how to use the MM6 with the bundled Cubase LE software.
Running through this 90 minute DVD are ‘Ray’s Breaks’—custom beats from hip-hop producer Raymond Jones—played live and with full details on the sounds, splits, and loops being used.
Directed by Robin Moore for the newly-formed KEYFAX Digital Video Productions division, Making Beats On The Yamaha MM6 is designed to be an entertaining but highly informative look at the popular and inexpensive Yamaha synth.
KEYFAX’s Julian Colbeck told us, “The MM6 is not complex so it’s easy to think it probably can’t do very much. But especially if you’re able to use Cubase LE it’s way more powerful than you’d imagine, and we lift the lid on a whole range of features and applications that a lot of people tend to overlook.�
