SAN DIEGO, CA October 29, 2002 Update: Mobility Electronics, developer of the MAGMA Series of PCI Expansion Systems, has announced availability of its latest accessory for users of the popular portable 2 Slot Expansion Systems (CB2 series)- an internal Firewire Drive Kit, which allows users to mount an IDE/ATA hard drive inside the expansion enclosure, and connect directly to the host laptop or PowerBook computer, via standard Firewire connections! Offering convenience, performance and economy, these kits are expected to be very popular among the audio community, in particular users of Digidesign’s Pro Tools products. When used together with a CB2 Expansion System, these kits allow the audio user to use standard Pro Tools|HD or other PCI cards on an Apple PowerBook computer, and have 80 GB or more of disk space for session data- all in one enclosure. In addition to providing raw convenience, the Firewire Drive subsystem is a more affordable approach than other solutions. And, because storage data is being handled by Firewire, rather than across the PCI bus, like other solutions, there is absolutely no sacrifice in overall system performance, as measured by track counts. Two kits are available for CB2 users:
FWD80KITCB2: includes a 7200 rpm 80 GB Seagate Barracuda Ultra ATA/100 disk drive, IDE-Firewire converter with Oxford 911 Firewire Bridge chipset, (2) internal Firewire cables, (1) 6 foot external Firewire cable, and custom mounting bracket.
FWDKITCB2: includes all of the above, but excludes the disk drive. These kits may be purchased separately, or along with a CB2 system. When both a CB2 and a Firewire Drive Kit are purchased on the same order, Mobility will install the kit in the CB2 enclosure at no additional cost to the user! Those users who have already purchased their MAGMA 2 Slot CardBus Expansion System, may purchase either Firewire Drive Kit separately, and install it themselves. Complete installation instructions are provided with each kit. For more information on these kits, please visit
