Cheap and cheerful comressor, probably best suited to instrument processing - though that doesn't mean you cant put it across the mix. Useful in a live situation as you can use it ads a gate only at a pinch.

Possible to use the compressor and a hard knee or soft knee type and in between also. Can be subtle or vicious - though not as radical as some cheaper units (if that's what get;s you off)

A good budget unit will help the novice grasp the basics of compression whilst doing the job
