The UA 1176 is a paistakingly accurate reissue of a sixties vintage blackface UREI 1176 put together by the sons of the original designer. It's a mono unit with large knobs for input and output gain, smaller ones for attack and release and has four push button selectable ratios.

Good Points
The original 1176 has to be one of the all time classic compressors and this new version does not disappoint.Dead simple to use - you just choose a ratio and turn up the input gain control to pile on the compresssion. The sound is naturally smooth but the top end seems to get nicely enhanced for some extra presence. I use this all the time on a 4:1 or 8:1 ratio to record electric guitar and it always seems to add a real edge and bite to the sound, it also sounds great on vocals. The real neat trick with one of these, however, is to push all four ratio knobs in together which sends the meter needle wild and creates an awesome slamming compression that sounds fantastic on drums, particularly on the room mics. It's a lot of money for a mono compressor but it has that 1176 sound thats been used on countless great recordings and that's priceless.
