I upgraded to the AW16 from a Fostex VF08 for the extra eight tracks and the ability to create CD masters without the need of a computer.

What I like about the AW16G is the built-in CD mastering and the extra 8 tracks but what I dislike about it is the somewhat cramped interface and the additional complexity required in setting up a monitoring mix to practice a line before recording it. The Fostex was also much more simple to use and, while there was only one effects processor, I feel that the Fostex's effects sounded much better than those on the AW16. Of particular note is the reverbs which seem to lack the depth and naturalness that seemed to be available on the Fostex.

Shortly after I bought the AW16G I moved house and didn't use it for nearly 8 months and had to learn all over again how to use it. I still prefer the immediacy of recording on the Fostex compared to the AW16G and have at times found that this console has stemmed my creative juices through unneccesary complexity.

ive had my aw16g for about three years now. the sound quality is amazing, however, the constant need to back everything up to cd's is driving me nuts. i recently had my hard drive crash, and subsequently lost about six months worth of work. paying work. i wish this damn thing had a usb port, so you could drag your work to a computer. you would think during the design process someone at yamaha would have though about this, but i guess they came out with that on the aw1600. way to screw us all over yamaha!
